The comet Tuttle-Jacobini-Kresák, formally designated as 41P/ Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák, is a periodic comet in the solar system. Discovered by Horace Parnell Tuttle on May 31, 1858 and independently rediscovered by Michel Jacobini and Lubor Kresák in 1907 and 1951 respectively, it belongs to the Jupiter family comet, which collects those comets that have aphelion comparable with Jupiter (~ 5.4 AU). The comet is an example of a small number of comets that have exhibited outburst that resulted in an increase in the brightness of 9 magnitudes. The others were: the 98P / Takamizawa in 1984, the 97P / Metcalf-Brewington in 1991 and 17P / Holmes in 2007. This image shows the comet on the night of March 22nd 2017 at 18:00 UT near the planetary nebula M 97 (The Owl Nebula) and the galaxy M 108 (see annotated mouseover).
