This image shows an area of the western part of the constellation Gemini. At the bottom left is IC 443 (Jellyfish Nebula). Exactly in the center is situated the reflection nebula VdB 75 (see the annotated mouseover). There is a big confusion about the objects in the middle of the image. Some sources indicate that VdB 75 = IC 444, Ced 74, DG 99, DG 100, LBN 188.65+03.75, LBN 840, Magakian 189, Magakian 190; but others disagree. Magakian himself in 2003 states that Magakian 189 = DG 99, GN 06.15.6; and Magakian 190 = DG 100, VdB 75, IC444, GN 06.16.4, Ced 74. However it is most probably that Van der Berg included in his catalog the bluish reflection nebula surrounding the giant star 12 Geminorum, of apparent magnitude 6.95. IC 444 and other nebulae (see mouseover) is associated with the H II region BFS51, located in the central regions of the molecular complex Gemini OB1. |
